Halloween!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year. Not only does it lie within the exciting season of fall (cold weather, here we come!), but it combines two of my favorite things - color and creativity! As October rolls round, I love driving in our neighborhood, watching families putting up decorations. Sometimes it's just lights or a pumpkin or two and then there's always a couple houses that go out of their way to include 15 tombstones, 2 witches, 20 skulls, 3 ghouls, 4 goblins, sound effects and blinking lights. Gotta love it. This year our neighborhood was tame with decorations (did I hear the word "recession"?) but the kids were out in full force asking nicely or in some cases begging for candy. Our housing complex is gated so we only got one kid but I ain't complaining because we forgot to buy candy this year. Thankfully Rich had some frozen butterfingers in the freezer. :)

There are just so many reasons to appreciate halloween but I won't go in to them otherwise this post will be a long list of 'things I love' and that might get a bit boring and narcissistic. (wink) Instead, I will tell you that as halloween night drew close and we realized that we had plans to go out and hence needed costumes, I started to wonder where the tradition of costumes originated from and why. Here's an excerpt from my dear friend Wiki:

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (Irish pronunciation: [ˈsˠaunʲ]; from the Old Irish samain).[1] The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes[2] regarded as the "Celtic New Year."[3] Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the living and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.[4][5]

Aaaah, makes sense now! Pretty interesting. I had a hunch that there was a reason why this tradition had begun years ago. I guess the costumes were used almost for safety to ward off the evil spirits. I still wonder how that tradition itself started. I'm assuming that one day somebody thought it must have been a good idea and then it took off.

So this year, we actually had party plans! Yes, I know, it was sad how excited we were. Although I will say that last year, we had plans set, costumes ready and a couple hours before we were to leave, all of our friends backed out. Sigh. And Rich had a really good costume for last year - Tiger Woods. Let's just say that there was body paint in the plans. :) This year, I really, really wanted to be Bjork in her swan dress.

But as you can imagine, that's a relatively hard costume to find! So instead....(Mum and Dad, please close your eyes), I was a sexy cop. And Rich was a 70's detective.

For some reason I really wanted to wear one of those sexy costumes that nearly every girl wears on halloween night. I've not done it before and for some reason felt that I was missing out. Well let me tell you, I won't be doing it again! I've never had so many people looking at me at one time! Not fun but at least now I know.
I absolutely adored Rich's costume. You can't see it the picture above, but he also had a police badge in his shirt pocket. And we used some of my make-up to give him the typical 70's sideburns as well as a tamed foo manchu moustache. So awesome!

The picture below is with our friend Stacey who had the most tricked out eyes! She had these freaky contacts on that were ice-cold-blue. She pulled 'em off really well and a random stranger took a picture of her. ps - please note my cleavage. I don't usually have it so...you know...I was proud of it. :)

And the last picture below is Rich with his friends Ryan and Stacey. Ryan was a tourist but sometimes morphed in to Gilligan. :)

We did see some pretty awesome costumes including Dog the Bounty Hunter and Amy Winehouse. And of course there were a ton of 'sexy' costumes too. ;-)
