tips, tricks and old mothers' tales

Urgh.  I woke up with a sore throat.  I thought it was allergies but the sore throat hasn't gone away and now I have the snifflies.  Thankfully my energy is still good which tells me that it's not the dreaded flu.  Amen for that!  I detest the flu as I quickly resort to becoming a big, big baby.  But enough about that!

An old boss of mine had always sworn by oil of oregano.  He would say that it would cure any cold overnight.  For years and years, he would tell us this and we would roll our eyes and scoff at him.  Well my friends, tonight, on the way home from work I made a quick stop at Sprouts and got myself a small bottle of oil of oregano, a container of apple juice, a can of chicken noodle soup and a loaf of bread.  The oil comes in a dropper format and so I added 4 drops of it in to a half glass of apple juice.  Oh fine. All right.  I actually added 6.  I REALLY want to be done with this cold asap.  Verdict?  That stuff is disgusting.  Literally - disgusting.  The apple juice masked the taste a bit (how the hell did my boss drink it straight?) but still the smell of incredibly strong oregano and then the pure taste of it was just awful.

An hour and a half later my nose is like a faucet.  I don't know if the oregano is opening everything up but I'm not yet feeling better....just even more sniffly.  And my nose somewhat tingles.

Uh-oh?

A friend suggested that I pour hydrogen peroxide in my ear and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the fizzing subsides.  Isn't hydrogen peroxide the stuff you use to bleach hair?  I'm terrified so I don't think I'll be doing that...just yet...although I did check to see if I have any.  The expiration date was 2007.  No go for tonight.  Maybe tomorrow.

So for now, I will alternate between hot echinachea tea and cold apple juice, and maybe before I go to bed, I might stomach another oil of oregano potion, although I'm dreading it.

And until then, I'm just curious, what's your secret cure for a cold/sore throat??  Tips, tricks and old mothers' tales?

In the UK we have a disinfectant called TCP - it is a sort of yellow liquid used to clean cuts and bruises. Anyway, it is great to gargle with it if you have a sore throat as it will kill off germs and reduce soreness. You are supposed to do it neat but you end up smelling like bleach so I water it down a little. Also garlic rubbed on toast is good. When I have a cold all I crave is powdered Knorr chicken noodle soup and it HAS to be that brand! Hope you feel better soon xx

wow, thank you everybody! how varied our methods are. :) i did end up drinking a lot of tea that i made with a 2 chopped cloves of garlic, with juice of an 1/8th of a lemon microwaved in hot water. that definitely helped a lot.

will have to save this post for the next time i get ill so that i can try everybody's ideas. thank you again for sharing!

Sleep & Water. A lot of it. That's all I do when I get a cold. Ok, so I typically drown it out with tons of nayquil/nyquil, but when I don't have to work, sleep & water. And somehow when I have a sore throat I always end up drinking hot water & honey. It's gross any other time than when I have a sore throat.

Hi, Kavita

My recommendation for a sore throat or the flu is to eat some coconut oil. It always works for me!

You can find out more by reading "The Coconut Oil Miracle" by Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D.
