Crafty Kavita!

I'm a pretty artsy fartsy person, didn't you know? :) I don't really do much arts and crafts - I generally don't really have reason to do so and am trying to de-clutter my life. But with a wedding coming up, it's a great time to turn that part of my brain on again! We are keeping the wedding simple as that is our style but I can't help but jazz up parts of it here and there with our personal touch.

Enter guest book idea. I've been to many weddings before where there is a guest book on a table and people sign their name. I love the idea but I wanted to take it to a different level. I wanted more than people's names - I wanted a little bit of their personality! I wanted to know what their words of wisdom were for our marriage so cue a very unique kind of guest book!

That's right! That's our guest book and I made it myself! My idea is to have everybody write their name and their 'words of wisdom' on a piece of decorative paper, fold it up and pop it in to the box. That way, I can make a scrap book out of it and it gives me a reason to be artsy even after the wedding is over! If you want to know how I made it...read away!

These are the supplies I used. I got everything from Michaels and don't forget to look for their coupons! I got the box for 40% off and everything else for 20% off. Nice... :) Also - I suggest using scrapbook paper.

It's most fun to have a little dog underneath the desk you're working at!

First I cut the decorative paper to the height of the box and then used a glue to glue it on to the box. I do not suggest the glue I chose. It sucked. It was some kind of elmer's glue.

I ended up using some cello-tape to hold the paper on to the box. Pretty paper, huh?

I made sure to tap the ends down at the bottom and top of the box where the corners are likely to flip up if not taped.

One piece of paper will not cover the entire box so for the next piece of decorative paper, I used scrapbook adhesive which is kinda like double-sided tape. Very handy! I used this to tape down the sides.

I love this kind of scrapbook adhesive. Not only is it strong, it's very easy to use. Once you stick it down, you just peel off the non-sticky cover, leaving the glue stuff. Arghhh, I'm awful at explaining this. Anyway it's good stuff because it creates a seamless look.

I used three pieces of scrapbook paper to cover the box and after taping all of the paper down, I used the 'rub down' method (seen in the picture) to smooth out any wrinkles and make sure everything was sticking together.

The lid does not come with a slot to put the pieces of paper in so I penciled one out.

I then used a box cutter to cut out the slot. Weeee!!

I wanted to add some jazz to the slot so I got the same decorative paper and created a border around the slot. I also penciled out where the cut-out for the slot should go.

Et voila! Here it is taped on top of the lid.

I wanted more jazz so I got a different color paper and created another border with a slot.

More jazz, more jazz! Yup, using a hot glue gun, I added orange gems around the border. Did I mention that orange was our colour for the wedding?

A bright punchy orange ribbon was hot glued to the rim of the lid. What a punch!

The box is done! Cute, huh?

Next I printed up instructions on a nice piece of resume paper - I knew that paper would come in handy one day! I found a cute font that had little hearts in it. Kinda soppy but I thought it was perfect.

I mounted this on decorative paper. Note that this paper matches what is on the lid of the box. You know...I'm coordinated and stuff. ;-)

Next, I found this wierd looking thing at Michael's in the hot glue gun section. Who knows what it is supposed to be used for but I had an idea!

First, take a scrap piece of paper and using the scrapbook adhesive, tape a column like in the picture.

Stick this on the back of the paper with the instructions on it. Then you can feed the wierd wire thing through like so.

Turn it around and you're done! It holds up the instructions! I'm very excited with this! All I have to do is cut up scraps of paper, put them in a basket and supply pens and it's done. :)

That is beautiful. It would make a fun "piggy bank" for kids. (Fun for them to make!) I love the colors. I love orange, so bright and happy.

I love that idea. You could also make a collage out of the pieces of paper and frame it?
