Eating my words...publically

Ok so I have a confession to make. At about 2am last night, Shila jumped up on our bed.  Now you've got to understand that Shila is not that kind of dog.  She doesn't usually just invite herself up on the bed.  Rich and I both moaned in frustration that our 65 lb dog had just helped herself to a nice dose of the bed.  I told her to get off the bed which she did.

30 seconds later, she jumped back on.  I started to get a bit more frustrated and told her again to get 'off'.

30 seconds later, she jumped back on again.  Ok, so then I was irritated because Shila is generally a well-behaved dog and she always listens to Mummy (that's me).  I told her 'off' which she did.

30 seconds later, the same rigamaroll and I instructed her very firmly to get off the friggin' bed or else.

You can guess what happens, right?  Yup!  She was back on.  This time I got out of bed, made sure the doggie door was open, made sure the water bowl was full.  Then I led Shila to her usual resting spot and put her in a 'down-stay'.

30 seconds later, she jumped back on.  Finally we just relented.  To be honest, I was kinda freaking out because this was such unusual behavior for my Shila.  I didn't know if she intuitively knew something was wrong and was trying to comfort us.  I know...it's a long shot but I kept thinking that either I had cancer, Rich had cancer or one of our friends/family members needed our help.  I know, I know...I'm an idiot but dogs...they sometimes know way before we do!

However little Miss Shila fell fast asleep.  I mean, within 2 minutes she was out (with a slight snore) and that's when I realized that she was COLD.  I swear she must have read my Snuggie post.  My poor baby nestled between Rich and I and just passed out.  Caught up in my own fears of cancer/death, I couldn't sleep.  An hour passed and Shila was becoming more and more comfortable - ie, she was starting to stretch out.  Ever seen a 65 lb dog really stretch out?  She takes up the space of a Mini Cooper.  In the end, I left the bed and ended up setting up my tent on the sofa loaded up with 3 blankets to keep warm on the cold leather.  Watched Sex Rehab on MTV (oh reality TV your grip is so tight!) for an hour and then tried to sleep.  Total sleeping time = 2 hours.  I'm surprised I'm even awake right now.

End of story?  Yes
Conclusion?  Dogs do get cold.
Lesson learnt?  Irony sucks.  Oh ok fine...the lesson learnt is to maybe not mock the canine Snuggie.  Sigh.
Result?  Shila now has a new pet bed complete with a fleece blanket (same with Taz), although I just checked on Taz and of course he is sleeping right next to the pet bed...not on top of it.  Urgh - I can't win!!

Ha ha ha ha.... I just have to add... ha ha hee hee. That is hilarious. And also? This is part of why our dogs are crated at night. Lily gets a nice blanket over her crate when it gets too chilly. And I know she is chilly, because she is sharing her dog bed with Penny for the first time. Its so darn cute, I am trying to not flood my blog with pictures of my dogs.

Cancer?! You crack me up! I would've thought an earthquake was coming as when they do, Sophie looks at me BEFORE it comes. FREAKY. Sophie typically gets under the excess blankets from her bed and ROLLS, rolls them right off of us. Maybe she needs a damn snuggie too. Lets see how your blankets work for them first before jumping to conclusions.

OMG... that is hysterical. I was just thinking how impractical the snuggie would be for a canine (wouldn't they have a hard time getting up and down?) and then you go and prove me wrong. Of course it is perfect for sleeping in at night. Duh. I'm publicly right there with ya.

Hope you get some good sleep tonight.

Hilarious! And if Shila is cold think about what this zero degree weather does to poor Milo! But as soon as he started taking up more space than my husband we booted him from the bed - good thing cause I would be sleeping on the couch just like you were - oh the things we do for our animals:)

Oh that's funny, I kept waiting to read about the terrible tragedy going on that you hadn't realized. But, no, just a little chilly!

PS - I just went to Walgreens and saw this Snuggie for Dogs right when I walked in the door. I laughed to myself (a little out loud) and I know people were looking at me like I was a freak - thanks a lot Kavita!

Leaner - oh please post pics of cute dogs sleeping together in one bed! i think i saw one but i love looking at cute doggie pics. :)

Lauren - Shila loves her new petbed so maybe Sophie would like one too? I think it's funny that she rolls in to them and pulls them off. That's pretty unique!

Jan - ever since we got her the bed she hasn't been jumping on the bed in the middle of the night. No snuggie as yet but the dog bed is working great. -x-

Lizzie - Oh i'm sure Milo is just as big if not bigger than Shila! You probably feel like you have a Mini Cooper up on the bed just like I do!

Lori Ann - thank you sister. I finally got caught up on sleep. :)

Ally/Maria - no cancer or death. Just crazy insanity on my part. Wah-wah-wah...

Lizzie - haha!
